Zhanna Popova (Krasnodar, 1989) studied Soviet history and quantitative methods of historical research at the Moscow State University, continuing with a MA degree in social sciences at École normale supérieure in Paris. Her research interests evolve around social history of Russia, state violence and forced migrations. She is a PhD candidate at the International institute of social history and the University of Amsterdam, working in the project “Four centuries of labor camps” (IISH/NIOD). Her research explores continuity and change in the Russian penal policies from late nineteenth century till the 1950s.
