Ameer Makhoul, a Palestinian citizen of Israel, is the director of Ittijah, the Union of Arab Community-based Organizations and a leader in the Palestinian community of Haifa. Makhoul was detained on 23 April 2010 by Israeli police on charges of espionage and treason. His lawyers suspect that he has been tortured by security officers while in detention. The Haifa District Court sentenced him in January 2011 to nine years in prison and another year suspended sentence for charges of spying and contact with a foreign agent from the Lebanon-based Hezbollah militant organization. He is detained in the military high-security prison of Gilboa, in the Beit Shean Valley.
