Tanneries in India

Helle Severinsen

Kampur is the hearth of the leather industry in India. Each day tanneries pump out about 300 million litres of polluted water into adjacent river Ganga. Pollutants include toxic levels of hexavalent chromium, mercury, and arsenic. Hexavalent chromium is known to cause lung cancer, liver failure, and premature dementia.
