For several months, Morocco has been shaken by a historic social movement: The Movement of the Rif (hirak al-Rif; Hirak). Born in a marginalised region following the death of Mohcine Fikri, a fish merchant crushed whilst attempting to retrieve his merchandise confiscated by the authorities, Hirak is now struggling against marginalisation, and for social justice.
Against this growing movement, the Moroccan state, unhappily, had only one response: repression. There are currently 176 Hirak political detainees, 50 of whom have been transferred from the Rif to Casablanca, including the emblematic figures of Nasser al-Zafzafi, and singer Silya Ziani, aged only 23.
Against the security regime, the ‘Committee of Solidarity with Hirak Political Prisoners Casablanca’ calls for solidarity from the world’s political, intellectual, cultural, and artistic voices, and for them to demand the immediate release of all of Hirak’s political detainees.
The principle is simple. You only have to send a video or photo showing your solidarity with Hirak to this email: solidarityhirakvideo[at]gmail[dot]com.
We will use these messages to edit a video which will be shared through social media and the press, demanding the immediate release of political detainees.
Hirak and the citizens of Morocco need your help!
No to resurgent authoritarianism!
Yes to liberty!
